PANKRATION NEWS RELEASE:

New Rules for Grappling, Pankration & Full Contact Pankration

Following new guidelines from FILA to reflect the Synchronization of Grappling, Pankration and Combat Grappling (MMA) we have modified our league rules. "A" Class rules consist of Full Contact Pankration also know as FILA Combat Grappling "B" Class rules consist of Limited Contact Pankration "C" Class rules are straight Grappling. All three sports start with the same rules as in Grappling or "C" Class rules, additional techniques such as Limited Contact Body Strikes are allowed in "B" Class rules with Full Contact Facial and Body Strikes allowed in "A" Class rules. This progression makes it easier for referees and competitors alike and provides a safe and logical path to gain experience before venturing out to Mixed Martial Arts. During this modification process we used a three tier system of feedback from our officials, coaches and competitors and implemented your suggestions. We tried to make clear distinctions of Limited and Full Contact rules making it easier to present these sports to athletic commissions. Because of this, our rules and verbiage differ slightly from FILA's international rules. HERE IS OUR FIRST DRAFT (Fonts still need fixing) Why is this Important? As many California residents know, the delegation of Amateur Mixed Martial Arts to the CAMO organization has also led to the mandatory regulation of all combative sports that contain "unrestrained" "body strikes"; "takedowns", "locks" and "chokes" We understand now that this side effect was unintentional and most likely influenced by a non related organization who acted as a consultant for Pankration and Grappling Regulation. Most if not all the parties involved are gone but we are still left to clean up the mess! As of now the CSAC has only targeted Pankration for enforcement. Legislative change is being proposed and we are now actively working with the CSAC to draft CSAC regulations for Pankration. At present time, along with CAMO Amateur MMA, the CSAC will also allow CSAC Amateur Mixed Martial Arts events but promoters must obtain a CSAC Amateur Promoters License and Athletes a CSAC Amateur Fighters License. This license also allows for participation in Amateur Boxing and Kickboxing events. Until the CSAC develops rules for Pankration, athletes are limited to Amateur MMA events. We hope that our updated rules be used as a guide for future Pankration regulation and/or (non regulation) in California and other states. Until then we will hold future events on Federal Installations with an open public event for everyone this Summer! Perspective promoters in other states interested in using our rules may contact us for assistance. Promoters in California interested in obtaining a CSAC Amateur Promoters License may contact us for assistance. PANKRATION NEWS RELEASE: 07/01/09

Former Pankration Pioneer, Western Regional Representative Jody Perry, Reinstated

After  two weeks of e-mails, phone calls and collaboration, Grandmaster Jody Perry PH.D./M.A., Soke, 7th degree Pankration, 63rd person to be certified as a referee in the United States,  and  2-Time Pankration Hall of Fame Inductee, has returned to the administration of Pankration.  (See attached e-mail and conformation letter

between USFPA President Dave Sixel,  Executive Director Jon Franks and Western Regional Director Jody Perry.)

FIRST ON THE AGENDA

Gentlemen and Ladies, for years my son Jay Perry and I have continually harped on tournament promoters to keep Pankration tournaments sports oriented and not UFC crush, kill, destroy, blood driven entertainment. UFC type of fighting has its’ place, but Pankration should not be the trial arena.  Instead Pankration competitions should first be looked at as a sport that is very aggressive, but is controlled and has a future to enter into the sport arena of a World Championships and/or the Olympic games. Although Pankration competitions could be looked at as a preliminary testing ground for an athletes’ techniques, the competitor must remember at all times that Pankration is a “Sport” and will be conducted as such.  The athlete should be confident that in Pankration competition he/she will be in a controlled environment where they can compete knowing that the referees’ and the tournament directors have their health and welfare at the foremost of their attention.

Besides the safety of the athletes, it has become more necessary now then ever to organize our network system of schools/clubs/dojos to ensure the endorsement of  FILA and the US Federation of  Pankration Athlima. Showing organization and an infrastructure of our region will satisfy the demands of the California Athletic Commission, FILA and the IOC – those allowing us to conduct tournaments without the policing and intervention of the CSAC.

Organizing our network will also weed-out the schools/clubs/dojos that claim to be associated with the USFPA but ARE NOT. As a former California State Athletic
Commission Inspector, I have and I will continue working very closely with the commission to identify the organizations clamming to be Pankration and take steps to assist the commission in pressing charges of FRAUD and tax evasion by claiming to be a non-profit organization under the umbrella of USAFPA.  With Jay's help I will also assume responsibility of organizing and coordinating tournaments within our region with the members of our network/association to be sure that tournament dates do not overlap.

Executive Director Jon Franks, has invested a tremendous amount of time and effort in the development of Pankration on the west coast and has developed the groundwork for all items mentioned in this news release. On that note, I would like it to be known that my returning to the Pankration arena is by no means an attempt to overshadow Jon Franks, his people and/or his position in the organization, but rather to take some of the responsibility of running the organization off his plate and help him in the building of  the USFPA on the West coast.

Dear Mr. Perry,

In regards of myself becoming the USAFPA president. I would like to inform you that your position as western regional director still prevails. I am honored that you and your son have been dedicated to the growth of the athletes and the sport of pankration. The state of the USAFPA has never been so strong and now being a part of FILA has made our Olympic dreams one step closer.

Your duties as western regional director will remain the same. This gives you the continued permission to train and rank pankrationist and to also certify referees.

Again, thank you for your continued dedication and to growth and well being of pankration and the USAFPA.

Dave Sixel
